Like any sensitive equipment, pipettes require regular maintenance to keep working their best. Leading laboratories throughout the country know to trust TTE Labs for all of their calibration, preventative maintenance, and pipette repair needs, but what can you do on your own to prevent premature wear and extend the life of these delicate instruments? Read on to learn more.

Exterior Pipette Cleaning

You should decontaminate your pipettes before you send them for calibration. Fortunately, the process is easy and takes only a few minutes. Here’s how to do it:

  • Gather the right tools. In addition to the pipette itself, you’ll need a box of KIMWIPES or a similar task wipe and a cleaning solution. We recommend a 70-percent ethanol or 10-percent bleach solution.
  • Clear a space. To avoid accidental damage to your pipettes, clear your work area of clutter.
  • Clean the pipette. Gently wipe down the outside of the pipette with a dabbed KIMWIPE. Do not disassemble the pipette or submerge it in water or the cleaning solution.
  • DON'T DISASSEMBLE! TTE expert technicians will do this as part of our service.

Once you’ve cleaned the exterior of your pipette, it’s ready for calibration. Contact TTE Laboratories Inc. for shipping instructions if you are a national customer, or to arrange a 24-hour service in the New England area including local pickup and drop-off for your lab via TTE Dedicated courier.  Outside this area?  Simply call us to schedule your pipettes for a 24 hour service at 800-242-6022.

Interior Pipette Cleaning---Best to Trust the Experts

Cleaning the interior of a pipette is a more complicated endeavor, and each make and model is different.  In our experience at TTE, we receive pipettes that others have tried to fix on the fly.   This delicate process is best left to the experts like the technicians at TTE Labs.  If you must proceed on your own, take time to consult product literature to learn the proper disassembly method. While individual components will have specific requirements for cleaning, there are some generally applicable best practices common to all pipettes:

  • Clean out air pockets and clear away clogs that can affect the performance and accuracy of your equipment. To do this, gently use a long-stemmed cotton swab with and approved cleaning solution.
  • Inspect, clean and rinse individual components using distilled water. Replace pistons if you notice signs of chipping, pitting or other damage.  Each make and model have clear recommendations for the use of lubricants (or the lack of lubricants), and each brand is different.  This is why it is best practice (and easier) to rely upon experts such as those at TTE Laboratories.
